Biography of Runtown and how he became successful in his music career

Runtown whose real name is Douglas Jack Agu was born in Enugu but grew up in Abuja and Lagos. He was born on 19 August 1989. After his primary school education, he decided to live with his mother in Abuja, following the passing away of his father. Runtown’s mother got attracted in politics therefore they decided to move back to Enugu in 2005. Young Runtown finished his secondary education there. Despite the fact that he wanted to become a professional basketball player, he soon began to study Management of Fashion Industry at the Fashion School of Technology in New York.

He started his musical career in 2007 when he released the first single “Runtown”. Another Runtown’s single “Forever” was released in 2010. IvanEdd films directed the video clip for this song. 2007 was the year Runtown moved to Lagos, where he collaborated with J. Martins and a Nigerian singer and songwriter Timaya. Later he started a record label Penthauz together with Phyno. Runtown released his two singles “Activity Pickin” and “Party like its 1980” on this label.

In 2012 Runtown’s song “High on you” was featured by Laza Morgan, a singer of Jamaican/American ancestry. Another artist, who was a guest singer on a song “Tonight” from his album “Elevation”, is a well-known Nigerian musician and singer J. Martins. In his interview, Runtown said that his musical career was influenced by American rapper Kanye West, famous Jamaican singer Bob Marley and Jamaican-American singer and rapper Sean Kingston. He considers these outstanding superstars to be his immense inspirations.

Mad Over You

His most prominent work – a song titled “Gallardo”, was featured by Davido. T-Spize was the producer of this song. It was released on the 20th of January 2014. Later the song won the Best Collaboration of the Year nomination at Nigeria Entertainment Awards in 2014. The video clip for this song has more than 8 million views. The director of this video was Clarence Peters and it was filmed in Nigeria. After signing a contract with the record label Eric Manny Entertainment, Runtown released two more songs – “Successful” and “Domot”. These songs as well as the ones he previously released received recognition from his fans. Skales, Patoranking and Runtown featured in WizzyPro’s song titled “Emergency”. The premiere was on on the 2nd of November 2014. Runtown’s first studio album “Ghetto University” was released on the 23 November 2015. Wizkid, DJ Khaled, Uhuru, Phyno and Anatii featured in this album as guest appearances.

With this album, Runtown got into “Top 5 Most Streamed Artist”. The video clip for the song “Banger”, which was featured by South African band Uhuru, got more than 4 million views and the number is only getting higher. He continued his work as a singer, songwriter, and producer. On the 4th of November 2016 he released a beautiful ballad about love called “Mad Over You”. It was listed on the Twitter Top Tracks chart on the Billboard at number 38. In the interview for the magazine, he confessed that an African beauty inspired him to write the song “Mad Over You”.
